According to legend, a powerful storm flooded a candy shop near the boardwalk. Sea water washed into the store, soaking much of the candy.
The next day, a little girl walked in hoping to buy something sweet.
The shopkeeper—who reportedly had a pretty good sense of humor—looked around at his waterlogged candy and joked,
“All I have left is salt water taffy.”
The little girl loved the name.
Customers remembered it.
And somehow, the nickname stuck.
Whether every detail of the story is true or not, “salt water taffy” became one of the most recognizable candy names in America.
